With extreme care, the stained glass and rotted wood frame was removed to our Studio. The window measures 14’ x 24’. Glass and wood templates were made for the stained glass restoration and for the wood frame replication. The wood replication consisted of new (sapele) mahogany 7½” thick along with creating new filigree wood cuts.

The stained glass rose petals were totally re-leaded. The five lower lancet stained glass windows which were originally a diamond grid were replaced with old French stained glass windows belonging to Rohlf’s.

Upon completion of the wood replication, the mahogany frames were primed. The exterior received two coats of Benjamin Moore Exterior Semi Gloss white paint. The interior was painted a bronze color.

An on-site boom truck was used to hoist up the four individual panels. A structural steel tube 3/16” x 4” x 14’ long was installed and bolted to each jamb to properly support the three top sections and to contain the wind loads.

The wooden frame was secured into the surrounding jambs with Hilti ½” x 8” bolts set in epoxy. The entire frame was sealed and a new brick mold installed. The exterior was completed with the installation of ¼” clear float glass. The total weight of the frame and steel alone was over three tons. The interior stained glass was installed secured and vented to the interior.

A successful and turn-key operation was completed on time and revered by all.

We were very pleased that Bill Cary from the Journal News came to visit Rohlf’s Studio for an article that appeared in the Sunday Life section on March 24, 2013. You can read the article at this link.

This being a family owned business for three generations we take great pride in our work. The article afforded the opportunity for people that are not familiar with stained glass to have a glimpse into the painstaking task in creating and or restoring stained glass. That is why when working on large religious or commercial buildings that we encourage the committee to visit our studio to see first hand the process that is done here at Rohlf’s Stained and Leaded Glass Studio.

Stained glass windows are a long term investment in the beauty of your building. Since many stained glass installations in the United States are 100 years old or older, they may require restoration and/or repair services. Even younger windows can require repair if they were installed incorrectly or have had modifications, such as insulating panels, that were performed incorrectly.

You can inspect your stained glass windows for these three main visual cues that repair and/or renovation is needed:

The windows start to buckle and/or bulge. Look at them on an angle to see the severity.

They have been improperly protected without venting. Look at the leads on the exterior to see if they are turning white (oxidation).

Check the reinforcing bars on the interior. If they are flat bars, see if the joints are cracked or broken off. If they have copper tie wires around the bars, see if the tie wires have come undone.

Left too long, stained glass windows will deteriorate to the point where the lead cames fail and pieces of the glass can actually fall out of the window. A recent example of this was at the Holy Rosary and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Columbus, OH. See the news report at this link. If your stained glass does need repair, you can reduce the cost of restoration, and ensure that all the sound glass in the windows is there for future generations to see by scheduling renovations before your stained glass windows fail.

If you are concerned about the state of the stained glass in your facility, and want to know for sure if your stained glass windows need repair, please schedule a professional stained glass inspection with Rohfl’s. Just call or email; we’d be happy to help.
